  1. 1593-1633. English poet. His volume of
  2. religious poems, The Temple, appeared in
  3. 1633, shortly before his death. His poems
  4. depict his intense religious feelings in
  5. clear, simple language. He became orator to
  6. Cambridge University 1619, and a prebendary
  7. in Huntingdonshire 1625. After ordination in
  8. 1630 he became vicar of Bemerton, Wiltshire,
  9. and died of consumption.
